After arriving in Kauai at 4 PM, we picked up our rental car through Turo, which was quick and easy with a free shuttle ride just five minutes from the airport. We checked into Waikomo Stream Villas, an Airbnb we highly recommend for its spacious and convenient location. Wanting to make the most of our first evening, we put on our swimsuits and headed to Poipu Beach for a dip in the ocean. As the sun set, we watched sea turtles come ashore to rest, a magical start to our trip. For dinner, we walked across the street to Puka Dog, an island favorite. It may look and sound unusual, but it’s absolutely delicious!

Day 2: Helicopter Tour, Poke, and Shipwreck Beach

We started our day with acai bowls from Anakē’s Juice Bar, conveniently located inside a market just down the street. The highlight of the day was a helicopter tour with Jack Harter Helicopters, where we soared above Kauai’s stunning landscapes, from waterfalls to the Na Pali Coast. For lunch, we had incredible poke at Poipu Poke Shack, located in the same market as the juice bar. In the afternoon, we lounged at Shipwreck Beach, climbed the cliff jumping area, and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. Before heading back, we grabbed a refreshing shaved ice from The Fresh Shave—the orange creamsicle flavor was our favorite!

Breakfast was at Java Kai, where we shared a lox bagel and a waffle, both fantastic. Their mocha espresso changed my mind about coffee—it was that good! For lunch, we stopped at The Musubi Truck, where we enjoyed delicious, generously portioned musubi. The afternoon was spent snorkeling at Poipu Beach, where the reef was in great shape and we spotted turtles and seals resting on the shore. Remember to respect their space! We ended the day with dinner at Keoki’s Paradise, a great spot with a lively atmosphere and excellent food.

Day 4: Nā Pali Coast Zodiac Tour & Thai Dinner

We woke up early before sunrise to meet our guides at Nā Pali Pirates for a Zodiac boat tour. The waves were strong—about 8 feet high—making for an exhilarating adventure, and the guides were such a blast. The tour took us around the island, stopping in a secluded cove for snorkeling. After working up an appetite, we grabbed lunch at Taco Libre, a food truck in Koloa town. Dinner was at Koloa Thai Bistro, where the flavorful dishes, great drinks, and casual vibe made for a perfect end to the day.

Day 5: Kauai Humane Society Shelter Dog Field Trip & Poke Bowls

One of our most heartwarming experiences was taking a shelter dog on a field trip from Kauai Humane Society. We had breakfast at Rainbeau Jo’s before picking up Haia, our dog for the day. We took her to a local beach and stopped by Kalalea Juice Hale for some delicious shaved ice. For lunch, we had another amazing poke bowl at Tony’s Catch, soaking in ocean views as we ate.

Day 6: Hiking & Tunnels Beach

We started our day with a morning hike at Kuilau Ridge Trail, an easy 3-mile out-and-back trek with beautiful views. Then, we headed to Ho’opi’i Falls for some waterfall swimming. It was a little tricky to find, but the effort was worth it, especially with the recent rainfall. Afterward, we stopped in Hanalei for some poke before making our way to Tunnels Beach. Though the sun wasn’t out, the nearly empty beach was perfect for a peaceful walk. We even discovered a little mermaid pool in the middle of the water and watched a rainbow appear over the ocean. For dinner, we stopped at Shakalafel Truck in Kapa’a, which did not disappoint.

Day 7: Waimea Canyon & Local Shopping

For our last day, we woke up at dawn and grabbed coffee from Bluebird Coffee in Kalaheo—hands down the best coffee of the trip. We then drove up Waimea Canyon to Kalalau Lookout, where we took in some of the most breathtaking views of the entire week. On our way back to the south shore, we stopped at a boutique-filled warehouse where we found some great surf clothes and handmade jewelry. Our last few hours in Kauai were spent at Salt Pond Beach, followed by one final Puka Dog before heading to the airport.
