The Perfect Fall Vacation Weekend on Cape Cod
Why Fall is the Best Time to Visit Cape Cod
Cape Cod after Labor Day? Chef’s kiss. Once the summer crowds clear out, Cape Cod transforms into the amazing fall vacation destination – a cozy, peaceful retreat. The air is crisp, the beaches are quiet, and the prices for accommodations and activities start to drop. But here’s the catch: some places close for the season, so planning ahead is key! We spent time checking restaurants and shops on social media to confirm they were open before heading out. Spoiler: It made for the most perfect fall weekend getaway.
Our Cape Cod Fall Staycation: September 28-30, 2024
Since we already live on the Cape, we wanted to fully embrace an area we don’t normally get to experience. So, we booked a weekend at the Captain Freeman Inn in Brewster—a dreamy, cozy B&B that felt like something straight out of Gilmore Girls. Seriously, I half-expected to see Lorelai and Rory sipping coffee on the front porch!
Day 1: Local Love Fest & Mini Golf at Pirates Cove
Lunch at ACK Gioia – En route to our staycation, we stopped at ACK Gioia for the freshest, most delicious sandwiches. Bonus: It’s right on the bike path, so it’s the perfect pit stop if you’re cycling through!
Love Local Fest in Hyannis – We lucked out with perfect weather and prime parking for this amazing festival featuring handmade goods from local artists. This is the best place to snag unique gifts and trinkets.
Mini Golf at Pirate’s Cove – No Cape Cod weekend is complete without some mini-golf, and our competitive sides came out full force. We made a bet: loser buys ice cream. And (obviously) Nick won.
Sweet Izzy for Vegan Ice Cream – Because it was still warm, my fave vegan ice cream spot, Sweet Izzy, made a surprise appearance and opened for the weekend!! I may have lost mini golf, but I still won at life and my stomach didn’t explode so we love that.
Checking In: Captain Freeman Inn
Around 4 PM, we checked into Captain Freeman Inn, where our second-floor room was waiting for us. The hosts, Laurie and Jason, were next-level incredible—truly the kind of people who make a B&B feel like home. They even lent us an oyster shucking knife and a bucket so we could DIY our own oyster happy hour (more on that later!).
The inn has a heated year-round pool, a fire pit, and a gorgeous porch with rocking chairs—basically, the dreamiest fall retreat, but I can only imagine how lovely it is during the bustle and warmth of summer. Since we weren’t super hungry after all our snacking, we kept dinner low-key with takeout from Pizza Shark in Dennis (highly recommend). Before bed, we put out our breakfast card for what we wanted to eat the next morning and I just love that little touch to make it feel at home – and I was looking forward to the pancakes ALL night long!
Day 2: Nature Adventures & Fall Feasting
Breakfast at the Inn – Waking up to the smell of fresh coffee and homemade biscuits? Peak happiness. The B&B spread included juice, fruit, pancakes, and sausage—everything homemade and delicious.
Hiking White Cedar Swamp Trail – This gorgeous Eastham trail blew me away. The wooden pathways and bridges through the swamp were peaceful and well-maintained, making for the perfect morning adventure.
Coast Guard Beach Seal Show – We stopped at Coast Guard Beach, and I swear I had a full conversation with the cutest seal ever. He kept bobbing up and down, waving at me while I ran down the beach. My heart = full.
Lunch at Sesuit Harbor Café – This spot is officially a yearly tradition for us. We grabbed Shipyard Pumpkinheads (fall vibes, check ✅), clams, and lobster rolls, all while soaking in the stunning harbor views.
DIY Oyster Happy Hour – We’d been craving buck-a-shuck oysters all summer but never found a spot, so we took matters into our own hands! We stopped at Big Rock Oyster Co. for fresh oysters, lemons, and cocktail sauce (it was $36/2 dozen so came out to be $1.50/oyster!), then set up by the B&B fire pit. Shucking them was… an experience. Major props to the pros who do this daily!
Sunset Tennis & Beach Walk – Before dinner, we hit up a local tennis court for a quick game and then made our way to the beach for golden hour. The sunset was unreal—fall skies on the Cape are just something else.
Dinner at Old Yarmouth Inn – Our final meal of the night was so good. We feasted on duck, crab cakes, a tasty corn salad, and dessert. The cozy, historic vibes here made it the perfect fall dinner spot.
Day 3: Slow Mornings & Hidden Gems
Breakfast at the Inn – Omelets, toast, berries, yogurt, granola—plus all the coffee. If I could start every morning like this, I would.
Exploring Crowes Pasture – This hidden gem in Dennis was stunning. It took us a minute to figure out where to park, but once we started walking, we couldn’t stop. The ocean views were straight out of a painting, and we had the entire place to ourselves.
Antiquing & Heading Home – Before heading home, we popped into a few antique shops in the area and went to the iconic church being laid out with pumpkins for the season! Perfect way to wrap up the weekend!
