Why Volunteer with Animals in Aruba?

Tourism is the heartbeat of Aruba, but with so many visitors coming and going, many stray and abandoned animals rely on the kindness of locals and travelers to receive care. Volunteering with animals in Aruba is an easy, feel-good way to help out while also getting some extra puppy cuddles or bonding with rescue donkeys. Plus, you’ll be supporting hardworking organizations that dedicate themselves to saving and rehabilitating animals in need.

How to Get Involved

• Check Ahead: Some organizations have specific volunteer hours or requirements, so it’s best to contact them before your visit.
• Bring Supplies: Many shelters appreciate donations of pet food, toys, and cleaning supplies.
• Spread Awareness: Even if you only have time for a quick visit, sharing your experience on social media can help raise awareness and support for these rescues.
• Adopt or Sponsor: If you fall in love with an animal, some rescues offer adoption or sponsorship programs to help support their care long after you’ve left the island.

1. Sgt. Pepper’s Friends

Sgt. Pepper’s Friends (named after The Beatles album!) is a well-respected rescue organization that focuses on rescuing and rehoming Aruba’s stray dogs and cats. Volunteers can assist with feeding, cleaning, socializing animals, or even fostering while on the island. I frequently stop by when I am on the island and the group is very caring!

2. Luna Foundation

Dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating neglected and abandoned animals, Luna Foundation welcomes volunteers to help with daily care, cleaning, and enrichment activities. They are located on the south side of the island so if you have some spare time after your trip to Baby Beach, stop by here!

3. New Life For Paws Foundation

This rescue group works to provide shelter, medical care, and loving homes for Aruba’s stray animals. NLFP often need volunteers to help with foster care, feeding, and transport coordination. This is actually the group I’ve fostered with for 2+ years and even adopted our new puppy from!

4. Aruba Animal Shelter

The Aruba Animal Shelter provides a safe haven for stray dogs and cats while they wait for their forever homes. Tourists can volunteer by spending time with the animals, daily feedings, or simply providing some much-needed love and attention.

5. Aruba Flight Volunteers – A Unique & Easy Way to Help!

One of the easiest and most impactful ways tourists can help is by becoming a flight volunteer. Many rescued dogs and cats are adopted by loving families in the U.S., but they need travelers to escort them. It’s a simple and totally free process! Here’s how it works:

• A rescue group will meet you at the airport before your departure and provide a carrier with a pet.
• You take the pet through security and onto your flight (most passengers are excited to see a puppy or kitten on board!).
• Upon arrival, a foster or adopter will meet you at baggage claim to pick up their new family member.

I have been a flight volunteer 5+ times and it’s always so much fun, and so simple – all the puppies below are the ones I’ve transported in the past year! You can even sign up to transport a cat/kitten. Who doesn’t want a fluffy snuggle on a flight?! (as long as you have cool flight attendants of course!) 6. Nine Lives Aruba Foundation – A Haven for Cat Lovers

If you adore cats, Nine Lives Aruba Foundation is the perfect place to volunteer. You can help with feeding, cage cleaning, administering medication, and, of course, cuddling and socializing with the cats and kittens.

7. AWA Aruba – Spay and Neuter Program

AWA Aruba (Animal Welfare Alliance) is at the forefront of Aruba’s spay and neuter efforts, helping to control the stray animal population. Volunteers can assist with pre- and post-surgery care, monitoring vitals, and comforting animals as they recover. It’s hands-on work but incredibly rewarding.

8. Aruba Donkey Sanctuary – A Unique Animal Volunteer Experience

For those interested in working with larger animals, the Aruba Donkey Sanctuary offers a volunteer/stay exchange program. Volunteers assist with cleaning, feeding, and caring for the donkeys while receiving free accommodations in a shared apartment, plus access to a communal kitchen and car. Applicants must be between 18-30 years old and commit to 20 hours per week.
